And that's exactly why Aion shouldn't be brought up in discussions about long standing popular games. Launch sales are great and all, but when it comes to MMOs, what matters is who lasts, not which newcomer gets a big start.

Ummm, no. Having 3.5 million in china puts it a few million behind WoW. Plus, there are no stories, unlike with AoC and WAR, of people disappointed and leaving the game in Korea, where it's been open for 6 months. Unlike other games, this one's beta is just to work out Korean to English translation, and to see how the NA/EU crowd likes it. The bugs were worked out in Korea.

It's relevant to mention Aion; because Aion is a finished product that has huge numbers, second only to WoW, at the same time that Blizzard has stepped in a shit pile due to bad international business sense. To say it's irrelevant is to look like you are standing there with your fingers in your ears going "WOWWOWWOWWOWWOWWOWWOWWOWWOW"

To expand:
Anyone remember Age of Conan? Warhammer: Online? Remember how awesome their launch sales were? Yeah, look at 'em now.

MMO's are about not just buying your customers but keeping them, and if you can't do the latter you're gonna be in trouble.

Aion has 3.5 million subscribers in China, and it's been out for 2 months. World of Warcraft has over 10 million subscribers, and it's been out for 4 and a half years. Theocrat is right, you cannot compare the two. Comparing Aion to another successful, long running game will be relevant when Aion still has millions of subscribers 4 and a half years after release. Until then, it's irrelevant. A game having a great launch is one thing, a game still having millions after years is another. As Bryant said, just look at Warhammer Online and AoC.

I think that Aion has almost 4 millions now and WAR and AoC lost half of their customers after two months or so. Only a lot of people didn't notice that in AoC, since some people bought the 3 month subscription.

GIve Aon a full year world wide and then start to compare it to the game of which we shall not speak. More power to them if they can upset You Know Who over time, but they aren't close yet.

I'm rooting for GW2 anyways. :P

The best =/= the most popular. Common rule in our world.

In this case, the most popular = the easiest, the most casual.

Also, 4 millions subscribers only in Korea. If they close Chinese WoW servers, it will have only 5 millions subscribers. Then it will be just a matter of time when Aion gets released in the rest of the world.

After playing in the Aion Beta, there is really nothing that could get me interested in Guild Wars again. Aion has spoiled me so much, when I log into Guild Wars I just look around going "meh..." and log back out again. I'll probably feel differently about GW2 when it comes out, for sure, but (for me) there is no comparison between the current GW and Aion.

Another thing is that we've only got how it's done in Asia right now, and in beta here. And I'd wait until it's released here to start judging its success... games that are big in Asia may not have such a large following here - just take a look at all the freebie games that few people outside Asia've heard of.

Plus, there's the issue of finances. Sure, Blizz may get hit hard by this suit... but they're Blizz, they can take it. They've got a ton of cash from WoW already, and more importantly, WoW isn't their only source of money - don't forget about what they've made off Diablo, Starcraft, and the other Warcraft games. And you know they're going to make bank when Starcraft 2 comes out, given the tons of completely fanatic players and the fact that it's practically a second national sport for South Korea. They can support WoW, even if they do lose China.

Another good example is the Lineage series. I've seen very, very little interest here in the states but I know that it does indeed have quite a few subscribers.

Since it's gonna be pay-to-play, in addition to waiting until we get the final product I'd also like to see how it performs endgame.

Lol common rule in our WORLD? hahah maybe YOUR world not in MY world or the world of thousands and millions of others who play WOW. You're just jealous because WOW rules and GW is just a wannabe hasbeen way down on the list that a lot of people TRIED, but, ended up going to something else because of how boring it gets.

The proper statement is that best does not ALWAYS equal the most popular or vice versa, but, to say best doesn't ever equal most popular is rather stupid and retarded.

Uhm. I never said that I wanted GW to be the king of the e-peens. Especially since both aim at different audiences - WoW for PvE kids, GW mainly for PvP people. At least, it used to be like that. You are one of the people who constantly try to prove their e-peen is bigger than other game's people have.

McDonald is really popular - is it the best? Try eating only in McDonald's for a month and check how much weight will you gain.

Windows is the most popular and the most used system. But does it mean it's the best? No. Microsoft took good ideas from other OS' and implemented them. Then everyone started making programs for Windows, ignoring other OS' and the perpetuum machina was created.

Twilight or The Jonas Brothers are one of the most popular in their category, but you don't read them/listen to them, do you? Because they are not that good, just popular. They all cater to masses, just like WoW does, and since masses usually are blind...

I still love what Mordakai said, along the lines of:

"Popular does not always mean best. High school proves that."

And 6 million subscribers still rules them all just like the Lord of the Rings Ring. In the business side of things popularity and best takes a back seat to profitable. Now, I can definitely say without a doubt that WOW is the MOST PROFITABLE bar none and puts GW to shame shame shame.

In the words of my felwoah forumite above me....ownt!

6 million doesn't 'rule them all', it's only a slim margin above other games.

If Aion continues being as popular as it is now, 6 million WoW subscribers will not compete with it. What is Aion at now, 5.5 million? That's not counting the HUGE number of disenchanted Chinese WoW players.

You sure state a lot of 'facts' without any evidence Red Sonya. Not very smart.

Um, no you don't win, *we* win, because that's what people are agreeing with: business wise, profitable = best.

But that doesn't mean a game doing less successful is worse, nor are we saying that the content and quality of the game is "da bestt" if it's selling better than everyone. Look at Beyond Good & Evil, that game sold poorly but it was incredible

Numbers can on occasion point towards a respectable amount of quality and in general it's safe to look forward to a purchase if it's an incredibly popular game, but that's about all you can ascertain from it.

Endgame in WoW is solid, PvP is kinda good and somewhat balanced but only enjoyable when you get the best gear. But everything between that, with that leveling business? Very, very subpar. If it wasn't then Blizzard wouldn't be making so many additions and changes to make it go faster.

Granted, that is where most of the players will be: in the leveling process. This is because it shares the same qualities that can be found in Guild Wars' campaigns: It's simple.

Plus, it's *#%(ing Warcraft!
